Program Length and Number of Positions

The program is 24 months in duration. Resident orientation activities begin the last week of June. The official start date for the program is July 1 of the matriculating year. Six positions are available for the entering class.

Program Type

Hospital pediatric dentistry residency program located in an outpatient facility of the University of Minnesota Physicians. A specialty certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded by the sponsoring institution, the University of Minnesota.

Applications are accepted through the Postdoctoral Applicant Support Service (PASS). The application deadline is September 15th. Applicants must also be registered with the National Matching Service. Description

The Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program offers its residents didactic and clinical training in all aspects of pediatric dentistry with special emphasis on pediatric medicine and interdisciplinary team care, growth and development, and clinical pediatric dentistry. The program’s main clinical site, the University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic made possible by Delta Dental of Minnesota, is a community located practice adjacent to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital and the University of Minnesota Physicians pediatric subspecialty clinics. The residency program clinic provides a dental home to infants, children, and adolescents including the generally healthy, those with complex medical conditions, physical and neurodevelopmental disabilities, cleft and craniofacial conditions, and inherited dental disorders. This site along with the Pediatric Dentistry hospital service (ED, OR, inpatient wards) at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital serves as a primary referral location for complex children receiving medical care at all of the Children’s Hospitals in the Twin Cities. Pediatric patients from distant sites in the United States and internationally also seek dental care at this program site when receiving care for bone marrow and solid organ transplants as well as other complex conditions at children’s hospitals in the Twin Cities. Clinical experience in space maintenance and orthodontics, oral and intranasal sedation, endodontic therapy, pediatric prosthodontics, and oral surgery is taught in the residency clinic during both years of the program. Second year residents staff the cleft and craniofacial clinics at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. They also teach dental students and pediatric medical residents who rotate through the residency program clinic. On a monthly basis, a pediatric dentistry resident provides Saturday morning outreach dental services at the Community University Health Care Center. Residents who successfully complete all requirements of the program receive a Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and are educationally qualified for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification process.

Curriculum

Residents attend structured lecture and seminar courses given by program faculty in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, dental specialists from the School of Dentistry, basic and clinical science researchers from the Academic Health Center, general and subspecialty pediatricians, allied health providers, and other experts from the Minneapolis St. Paul metropolitan area. Evidence-based practice and fluency in the AAPD guidelines are stressed throughout the curriculum. Content areas within the curriculum include but are not limited to behavior guidance, pediatric medicine, restorative dentistry, pulp therapy, growth and development, sedation and general anesthesia, hospital dentistry, dental traumatology, clinical orthodontics, cariology and caries management, infant oral health and dental home, pediatric oral pathology, periodontology, infectious disease, biostatistics, practice management, advocacy and education, and care of children with cleft and craniofacial anomalies. Intensive hospital rotations in anesthesiology at the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, hospital pediatric medicine and emergency department at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, and individuals with special health care needs at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare are completed at the aforementioned US News & World Report top Children’s Hospitals. All residents complete a hypothesis driven research project, present their results at a professional meeting, and are encouraged to seek publication of their work in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First year resident (2017-2018): base salary $53,000. Second year resident (2017-2018): base salary $55,000.
