Due to the overwhelming continued success of the scholarship program of the Pediatric Dentistry Master Clinician Program, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: The Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is pleased to again offer seven scholarships to be part of this exciting program for 2019.
A switch from an office practice to an academic career may seem like a daunting challenge - it needn't be. An academic career provides the practicing dentist a new opportunity to utilize their experiences in shaping the careers of the aspiring professional. Dentists that teach also have a greater opportunity to develop new techniques and innovations in care through research and scholarly activities and can also influence national dental education policies through service with the AAPD, ADA, ADEA, HRSA and NIDCR.
Other benefits of an academic career include improving access to oral health care through community service, mentoring of residents, full- or part-time employment with benefits and personal and professional growth.
Selected candidates will attend the Academy for Academic Leadership's Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) held at the Denton A. Cooley, MD and the Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center on the campus of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Texas. The dates for the 2019 ITL are August 19 - 22, 2019. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to attend the AAPD Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry course in the location of their choice.

Fellow of AAPD
-
In 2012 the AAPD revised their current fellow status to focus on leadership, scholarly activity and community involvement. Previously fellow status was automatically granted when you became board certified as a pediatric dentists. The term fellow in a professional association often refers to a person who has distinguished themselves above the standard norm, either by publications or contributions to the profession.
Starting in 2013, fellow status was no longer automatically granted to board-certified pediatric dentists. We introduced the new fellow program that will offer our members an opportunity to further distinguish themselves in the profession. Members who received their board certification in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 etc. have an opportunity to earn their fellow status in this new program.
