Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program commencing July 1 of each year. Ten new positions are offered each year.

Application

The application deadline is October 1 of the year preceding matriculation. Participation in PASS is highly recommended. Participation in MATCH is mandatory. PASS applications must include a minimum of three (3) professional evaluations, NBDE results, dental and pre-professional educational transcripts and a resume.

Description

This residency is a hospital-based program that offers a broad exposure to all relevant components of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to extensive management of primary care patients, residents actively participate in care for the developmentally disabled, as well as for the medically compromised. A well-rounded didactic program serves to integrate clinical experience with academic knowledge.

Curriculum

The Pediatric Dentistry Resident will receive extensive didactic and clinical instruction or learning experiences in all aspects of Pediatric Dentistry. The resident will have abundant opportunities to provide both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence including those with special health care needs. The program curriculum encompasses topics such as:

  • Advocacy 
  • Behavior guidance
  • Biostatistics and clinical epidemiology 
  • Comprehensive dental care
  • Growth and development 
  • Head and neck anatomy
  • Hospital dentistry 
  • Interceptive orthodontics
  • Oral facial injury and emergency care 
  • Oral diagnosis
  • Oral medicine 
  • Oral pathology
  • Physical diagnosis 
  • Practice management
  • Prevention and health promotion 
  • Pulp therapy
  • Sedation (nitrous oxide, enteral, IM/IV) 
  • Treatment planning.

Didactic instruction is provided via participation in lectures, seminars, and adjunctive continuing education courses. Clinical learning experiences occur in conjunction with program faculty during regularly assigned patient care sessions or with medical faculty on hospital rotations.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $58,900 and second-year stipend is $60,900. Fringe benefits include 4 weeks paid vacation, complimentary health insurance and daily meal plan. Subsidized housing and parking is available by lottery. Tuition is $5,000 per year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be a graduate of an ADA accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school or be eligible for licensure in New York State.
