Description
Cincinnati Children's Hospital is a busy, tertiary care teaching hospital that emphasizes quality patient care, education and research. It services the tri-state region of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. CCHMC has been nationally ranked among the top three Children’s Hospital according to US News and World Report for four years.
The pediatric dental residency program was first accredited in 1966 by the ADA Council on Dental Education. The program manages 37,000 clinic visits, 1,700 operating room cases and nearly 2,500 after-hours emergency visits each year. The patient base includes well and special needs patients. All clinics in our Division have a full complement of dental staff/auxiliaries to support each resident.
The educational philosophy is centered on high quality; high volume care with case-based learning resting on a firm foundation of assessment of the best evidence dentistry has for therapies. Additionally there is a strong emphasis on management and coordination of care for patients with special healthcare needs, which comprise 60% of the patient pool. Residents care for patients in a group practice environment that encourages teamwork. The clinical program is supported by a well-rounded didactic curriculum taught by a cadre of board-certified dental and medical specialists.
The first year focuses on the concept of comprehensive clinical care for the well child and includes extensive experience with traditional behavior management, in-house consultations and care in the operating room. First-year residents provide after-hours emergency care including oral facial trauma, laceration management and facial infections. Additionally residents spend three weeks with Pediatric Medicine, In-House Pediatric Ward and Emergency Medicine. Finally residents spend five intensive, uninterrupted weeks in the Division of Anesthesiology providing airway management for Operating room cases.
The second year is designed to increase responsibility and challenge residents. Each resident serves 10 weeks as chief resident in accountable for; all patient care provided in the operating room, In-office general anesthesia/ IV sedation and in-house consults. PL-2 residents also provide clinical dental care emphasizing the medically, mentally and physically challenged patient.
Our Fairfield location provides a private practice setting off-site during the second year. This rotation exposes resident to practice management issues, as well as managing a multi-chair practice with a full complement of dental auxiliaries. PL-2 Residents are allowed the option of moonlighting in our Adolescent Evening Clinic which cares for healthy teenagers 14-18 years old. Full Ohio Licensure and approval of program director and CCHCM Medical Staff are required for this option to be available.
Residents obtain significant experience with both nonpharmacological and pharmacologic behavior guidance. Residents average; 150 OR cases, 63 Oral/Intranasal sedations, and 110 In-office general anesthesia/IV sedations. Residents practice sedation via different routes of administration and work with medical anesthesiologists on many cases as well.
Residents learn Orthodontic/Growth& Development under a board-certified full time Orthodontist. 1st and 2nd years are assigned to teams which care for approximately 15-30 patients each. Care focuses on limited/interceptive orthodontics but has full orthodontic components as well. Our orthodontic program was cited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation for an integrative and innovative teaching model.
Our dynamic full-time faculty participate and mentor residents in specialty clinics; Craniofacial Anomalies, Epidermolysis Bullosa, Esthetic Dentistry, Endodontics/Traumatology, Periodontics and Oral & maxillofacial surgery. Sub-specialty clinics are attended by specialists in each discipline.
