Description

Founded in 1994 by Dr. Silvia Perez-Spiess in southwest Brooklyn, the NYU Lutheran Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry (AEPD) Program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The program provides a strong didactic and clinical foundation. In 2003, the program expanded to Providence, RI and in subsequent years, established programs at 12 additional sites across the country. Affiliated sites are mainly within federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) or hospitals. This innovative program is a hybrid blend of a strong distance learning didactic curriculum along with extensive clinical experience. Distance-based didactic learning is achieved through asynchronous web-based education modules, via the Sakai platform, and a state-of-the-art video teleconferencing (VTC) system that connect residents and faculty from all sites. Faculty experts lecture from around the country. Significant emphasis is on hospital dentistry, pediatric sedation, pediatric general anesthesia, and pediatric medicine. Graduates are trained to be an integral part of the medical team/hospital environment. Additional experiences include: pediatric preventive and restorative dentistry, disease management of early childhood caries, orthodontics, treatment of craniofacial conditions, research, ethics, and policy advocacy. Upon successful completion of all requirements, the resident is awarded a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dental Specialty Education, Inc. (DSE) is a not-for profit educational organization dedicated to serving pediatric patients in one of the most dentally underserved communities in the state. Residents after hours on-call, pediatric sub-specialty and outpatient surgery center experiences are at DSE’s clinical training site, Children’s Dental Health Center (CDHC).CDHC has managed 32,000+ patient interactions in the last year. CDHC has two locations. The inner-city Nashville dental clinic is dedicated to the service of the Medicaid population. Pleasant View’s predominately rural Medicaid population includes 20,000 children in a 15 mile radius. All staff involved in direct patient care are current with BLS/CPR certification and the residents and supervising pediatric dentists are PALS certified. Digital intra-oral and extra-oral radiographic equipment is available within the dental center.
