This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 each year. The program accepts two residents on the even year and one on the odd year.

Description
The Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Primary Children’s Hospital is located on the University of Utah Campus in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is a twenty-four month, hospital based program, combining an emphasis on clinical proficiency as well as the interdisciplinary approach to treating the pediatric dental patient. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Individuals who have completed the program will meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). A Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded to individuals who successfully complete the program. The program prepares its graduates for specialty practice.

Primary Children’s Hospital is a 289 bed facility and the 20th largest of approximately 42 free-standing children’s hospitals in the nation with the 28th highest acuity. It is ranked as one of the nation's best children's hospitals in 10 of 10 specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017-18 Best Children’s Hospitals Ranking Report and is one of only 24 hospitals in the nation to be ranked in all 10 categories. The hospital is also a full-service Trauma 1 Pediatric Center certified by the American College of Surgeons and serving six Intermountain states. The Trauma Service system emphasizes the delivery of expert care, research, education and prevention. Pediatric dental residents serve an important role in the Emergency Department with responsibilities to work alongside healthcare providers from many departments in the treatment of oral and facial infection and dental trauma.
Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to provide didactic and clinical instruction for the resident and an opportunity to develop proficiency with both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through early adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The program encourages the development of a critical and inquiring attitude necessary for the advancement of practice, research and teaching in pediatric dentistry.
Residents engage in scholarly activity which includes the participation in daily didactic seminars with attending faculty and completion of a clinical research project which utilizes data collection, analysis and elements of the scientific method. Research training, funds and time are incorporated in the curriculum. Research projects are presented at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Annual Session Poster Presentation Contest and supported by the program.

Clinical and didactic teaching opportunities include teaching medical residents, and other allied health staff.
Program Stipend and Tuition
First-year stipend is $51,304. Second-year stipend is $54,516. Comprehensive benefits include: health insurance and acquired PTO time each year.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:
- DDS or DMD graduate of a U.S. or Canadian CODA-accredited dental school with completion of school or current residency in good standing by start of orientation (end of June)
- Be a US or Canadian citizen or permanent resident of the US
- Complete with a passing result, Part I of National Dental Boards prior to application and Part II by start of residency
- Eligible for state of Utah dental license with Class II Anesthesia Permit and DEA Certificate prior to start of residency
- Be proficient/fluent in the English language
- Complete PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service) application
- Register with the National Matching Service
- 4 PEF (Professional Application Forms) dentists and / or professors that know the applicant well through PASS
- Dental and pre-professional education transcripts through PASS
- Official DAT Score
- Recent 2 X 2 Photograph, submitted in PDF format to the program manager
- $50 application fee payable to Primary Children’s Hospital
- Personal interview in Salt Lake City, UT (upon invitation)
- Live within 30 minutes of hospital by start of residency
ADAT score will be considered if available, but not required.

Program Strengths
- Strong clinical involvement in the treatment of healthy as well as the medically compromised pediatric patients
- Experience with oral sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia in conjunction with Sedation Team and the Department of Anesthesiology
- Multidisciplinary rotations throughout the Hospital include Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Pain and Sedation Service, Utah Regional Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Pediatric Medicine, Neurobehavior, Genetics, Anesthesia, Pediatric Medicine and Office Visits
- Additional certificate in URLEND Fellowship (Multidisciplinary leadership training at the post-doctoral level for neurodevelopmental disabilities)
- Small program which creates tremendous opportunity to engage and learn within a multidisciplinary hospital setting
