Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Six new positions are offered each year. Graduates of US, Canadian, and foreign dental schools are eligible to apply. Only graduates of ADA-approved schools are eligible for resident salaries and tuition waivers.

Program Type

This is a combined university- and hospital-based certificate program with the option for a master's degree.

Rutgers School of Dental Medicine participates in the American Association of Dental Schools PASS centralized application program and the matching program of the National Matching Services.

Description

The program in Pediatric Dentistry is balanced with significant hospital extramural affiliations. The course of study includes seminars, clinically oriented basic sciences, instruction in advanced clinical procedures and training in hospital protocol. Upon completion of the program, the student receives a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets the advanced education requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.

Curriculum

This program is designed according to the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the accreditation requirements of the ADA Council on Dental Education. The program has been granted full approval by the Council on Dental Education and includes the courses listed below. 

The core curriculum is designed to provide a broad foundation in the biomedical sciences upon which various dental subjects and training in specialized dental disciplines are based. The biomedical science core curriculum meets the requirements set forth by the ADA for all advanced dental specialty education. Didactic instruction occurs in five one-hour seminars weekly during both academic years of the program. Courses and training include: basic pediatric dentistry techniques, advanced clinical pediatric dentistry, advanced pediatric dentistry seminar, clinical seminars, textbook review, current periodicals review, management of special needs patients, orthodontic treatment planning seminar, clinical orthodontics, pediatrics, anesthesiology, statistics/scientific writing, research methods and biostatistics, pediatric dentistry research and pediatric dentistry teaching.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year tuition is $51,117. Second-year tuition is $51,158. 

First-year stipend is $55,131. Second-year stipend is $58,867.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission: 

• D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree or the equivalent international degree
• Dental and preprofessional education transcripts 
• Three ADEA PASS PEF evaluation forms 
• Personal interview
• Must pass NBDE Part II before the start of the program (US and Canadian trained only) 
• TOEFL (Foreign trained only)
