Description

The residency program in pediatric dentistry is a two-year, hospital-based, university-affiliated certificate and Master of Science program. The program combines clinical training with studies of the basic sciences as related to pediatric dentistry. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), and persons completing the program meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. A Certificate of Postgraduate Pediatric Dentistry Education is awarded by The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry, as well as a Certificate of Residency from Nationwide Children's Hospital, upon successful completion of the program. On completion of the thesis requirement, students will receive the required MS degree. The program is designed to fully prepare the student for specialty practice, as well as to provide educational opportunities for those who desire to pursue a teaching or research career in pediatric dentistry.

Curriculum

The curriculum offers the opportunity for extending the student's diagnostic ability, basic and special clinical knowledge and skills and critical judgment. It will offer experience in closely related areas to provide students with the understanding of comprehensive care. The core of the curriculum includes all subject matter indispensable to the development of a competent pediatric dentist. A supporting portion of the curriculum is included to extend the student's educational experience, enhance ability to think critically and independently, and communicate accurate information both clearly and effectively. The students will learn to work with consultants and clinicians in other dental specialties and health fields. Didactic courses, seminars and clinical experiences are provided to develop these necessary skills.

The didactic courses include: statistics, research design, photography and public health. Lectures and seminars include: physical and emotional growth and development of the child, cephalometrics, preventive procedures, traumatology, advocacy and public policy, biomechanics and limited orthodontics, behavior management, sedation, general anesthesia and other traditional pediatric dentistry courses.

The students will learn to critically evaluate scientific literature and be expected to produce a publishable paper. Students must complete a thesis to satisfy the requirements for the certificate.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $55,826.95. Second-year stipend is $57,549.56. Tuition is currently paid by the College of Dentistry since students are teaching assistants. The university provides malpractice insurance and three weeks vacation per year. Residents are eligible for benefits through the University as graduate students and the hospital as employees.
