Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Eight new positions are offered each year.

Program Type

Hospital-based certificate program; with a Master of Science in Oral Science degree as an elective. Degree candidates may require more than two years to complete research and thesis requirements.

Description

The Pediatric and Community Dentistry Department has been serving the children of Western New York since 1917. Our faculty and staff employ the most up-to-date and comprehensive treatment techniques and materials to ensure excellent dental care for children at multiple locations throughout Western New York.

Each year over 110,000 patients visit us for hygiene instruction, sealants, cleanings and comprehensive dental care. Our patient population is large and diverse with many medically and physically compromised children.

Curriculum

The Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Training Program is a hospital-based, 24-month certificate program fully accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation. The residents rotate at several clinical sites, including the John Oishei Children's Hospital, the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, the Kaleida Ambulatory Care Center at the Conventus Center for Collaborative Care, and multiple faculty practice sites at University Pediatric Dentistry Dental Associates. Our goal is to train the residents to become proficient in all phases of pediatric dentistry including treatment planning, prevention, growth and development, comprehensive pediatric and adolescent restorative care, pharmacological and non-pharmacological behavior management techniques, treatment of children under general anesthesia, the management of the medically compromised child, and the management of dental traumas. Off-service rotations such as anesthesia, pediatric medicine, emergency medicine and various speciality care clinics are included in the program.

The opportunity for continued study and work in the area of dentistry for children is unlimited. The curriculum is organized to provide experience in all phases of clinical care, comprehensive academic instruction, and research experience. The Conventus Center affiliated with the hospital has a dental clinic dedicated solely to children with special healthcare needs, where residents treat patients with various medical, mental, physical and developmental disabilities. At the hospital, residents treat dental emergencies while on-call, attend rotations, and perform pediatric dental cases under general anesthesia. Residents also spend a large amount of their training time working alongside pediatric dental faculty in various clinical environments at multiple University Pediatric Dentistry offices. The diverse patient base and the variety of clinical training sites prepare residents for their future careers, whether they choose to be in a clinical, private office, or academic environment. The sedation training curriculum that exists within this program is unparalleled, with residents working closely with a pediatric anesthesiologist to ensure that safe, effective sedation techniques are being utilized for patient care. Residents also have the opportunity to teach third and fourth year dental students who rotate through the hospital and other affiliated sites as part of their pediatric dentistry assignment. Lectures, seminars, case presentations and literature review sessions are incorporated into the curriculum as part of their schedule. 

The program is sponsored by the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, whose campus is located approximately five miles from the hospital.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $51,131. Second-year stipend is $51,892. There is no tuition for certificate students. For those students working towards the Masters certificate, tuition is approximately $31,705 for in-state students and $43,045 for out-of-state students. Health insurance coverage is provided for residents and their families.

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission: 

• D.D.S. or D.M.D. from an ADA-accredited dental school 
• Must be eligible for temporary license in New York State 
• US Citizenship or Permanent Resident
