Description
The Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto is the oldest fully accredited specialty program in Pediatric Dentistry in Canada. This is a 36 montth program leading to a Master of Science Degree with advanced clinical training in all aspects of Pediatric Dentistry. There is a PhD option available. The didactic program will be centered at the Faculty of Dentistry, while the clinical program will be divided between the Faculty of Dentistry and The Hospital for Sick Children with rotations to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab and Mt. Sinai Hospital. The program will also involve rotations to public health community dental clinics and to Northern Ontario. Students will manage emergency cases, cases under general anaesthesia, will provide hospital and faculty consultations, cases under conscious sedation, pediatric pathology, pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, fixed and removable orthodontics and complex restorative cases. In addition, students will be given some undergraduate teaching responsibilities. Students are required to complete a Master’s research project during the program. As this program develops, the curriculum may be changed to meet the needs of students. The combination of clinical, teaching and research experience in our program will prepare graduates for careers in private practice, hospital, community and academic settings. The MSc/ PhD degree and diploma are awarded concurrently. With successful completion of the Program, students will be prepared for the National Dental Specialty Examination in Pediatric Dentistry for Royal College of Dentists of Canada Fellowship and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examinations.
Curriculum
The student must complete all required clinical and didactic courses within the three-year period. A research project must be undertaken which will be defended as a Master of Science thesis, in accordance with the standards set by the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto. Most didactic courses are given or directed by members of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Core courses are multidisciplinary, such as statistics, and are given to all specialty students at the Faculty of Dentistry. In the second and third year a significant amount of time is allocated for research. The academic course work includes the following topics: child development, management of pediatric oral disease, behavior guidance (non-pharmacological and pharmacological), craniofacial growth and development, orthodontics, traumatic injuries, pediatric medicine, biomaterials, oral pathology, speech/language pathology, biostatistics and research design. Learning will be done in small group seminars and case conferences.
